According to The Athletic, Bayer Leverkusen want to fill the gap in defence left by Jonathan Tah’s departure with Jarell Quansah. The English centre-back has reportedly been added to the transfer list as part of the new planning process following Erik ten Hag’s appointment as manager.
The Athletic reports that Liverpool are demanding a transfer fee of over £40 million for Quansah this summer. This amount corresponds to approximately €47.1 million. The club are not open to low offers, taking into account both the player’s potential and his homegrown status. Should Leverkusen make a serious move, the deal could become one of the most expensive defensive transfers in the club’s history.
Quansah made 25 official appearances for Liverpool across all competitions in the 2024/25 season. He did not contribute any goals or assists, but showed improvement in both his physical pace and positional awareness. With his defensive cohesion and on-pitch concentration, he presented a mature profile despite his young age.
Transfer relations between Leverkusen and Liverpool have intensified this summer. After Jeremie Frimpong, a deal was also reached for Florian Wirtz. However, the Quansah move is not linked to this process. Talks between the two clubs are taking place on a completely independent front.
According to The Athletic, Quansah was also on Newcastle United’s transfer list last summer. The Tyneside club made an official approach, but Liverpool promptly rejected the offer. Leverkusen’s different sporting project and stronger financial offer could make this negotiation more complex this time.
Offloading the young centre-back could prompt Liverpool to reconsider their defensive setup. Head coach Arne Slot wants to start the season with a deep and stable defensive rotation. A potential sale could push Liverpool to seek a new centre-back.
