Modrić prepares to say goodbye: Milan awaits after 13 legendary years at Real Madrid

The end of an era: From Tottenham to Madrid, Luka Modrić closes the chapter on a remarkable 13-year journey and sets his sights on Serie A giants Milan.

A folded Milan scarf in his hand becomes the hinge between eras — neither forgotten nor fully embraced.

The end of an era: From Tottenham to Madrid, 13 years of consistency

Luka Modrić is nearing the end of his legendary 13-year spell with Real Madrid. Signed in the summer of 2012 from Tottenham for €35 million, the Croatian maestro has secured legendary status in the club’s history.

593 matches, 138 goal contributions: a career defying time

Modrić made a total of 593 official appearances for Real Madrid, registering 43 goals and 95 assists — a testament to the consistency and class he brought to the team. Even at the age of 39, he has maintained his form throughout the 2024–25 season, featuring in 59 matches across all competitions with 4 goals and 9 assists.

25 trophies, 1 Ballon d'Or: cementing his legendary status

Modrić’s impact at Real Madrid goes far beyond statistics. He won a staggering 25 trophies with the club:

  • 6 Champions League titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2024)

  • 4 La Liga championships

  • 5 FIFA Club World Cups

  • 5 UEFA Super Cups

  • 2 Copa del Rey trophies

  • 5 Spanish Super Cups

Among these, perhaps the most iconic achievement was winning the Ballon d'Or in 2018. That same year, he was also named “Player of the Year” by both FIFA and UEFA. Modrić became the only player to break the decade-long Ballon d'Or dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

A new challenge: Milan deal agreed, only a formality remains before it becomes official

Now, a new chapter is about to begin. Following the FIFA Club World Cup, Modrić will end his time in Spain and join Serie A giants Milan. The club’s sporting director, Igli Tare, has confirmed that an agreement has been reached. The only remaining step for the deal to be finalised is the conclusion of Madrid’s tour in the United States. Talks were held before the tournament, but the signature will come after Modrić officially bids farewell to Real Madrid.

Igli Tare: “Modrić will bring the leadership we’ve been missing”

Tare expressed high hopes for what Modrić will contribute at Milan. “One of our biggest weaknesses last season was the lack of clear leadership. Modrić answers that need entirely. He’s a special figure in world football, and I’ve heard from him personally that he still has the hunger to compete,” he said.

Experience with character: A mentor for Milan’s youth

According to Tare, the transfer isn’t just about technical quality — it’s also about adding a figure who can inspire the club’s younger players. “It’s not just Modrić we’ll be bringing in; there will be one or two more experienced players joining as well. These figures will mentor and inspire our young players and become driving forces on the pitch,” he noted.

Modrić’s first question: “Is this team built to win the title?”

Tare also shared insights from his personal meeting with Modrić, revealing the midfielder’s competitive mindset. “This is a player who has lifted the Champions League seven times with Real Madrid — an unparalleled résumé.” He’ll bring direct leadership, a winning mentality, and character to the squad.”

A departing legend, an inspiring mind

Luka Modrić, a symbol of an entire era at Real Madrid, is now preparing for one final challenge at Milan. He is no longer just a figure of the past — he represents a footballing intellect that will continue to shape the future.
