Race heats up for Jonathan Tah: Bayern Munich back in the mix as European giants remain on alert

Following his decision to part ways with Bayer Leverkusen, Jonathan Tah is back on Bayern Munich’s radar. With interest also coming from Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid, competition across Europe is intensifying for the star centre-back.

Four flashing destinations surround him, but the weight of clarity lies in choosing the right track.

Last summer, Bayern Munich made a move for the player but eventually pulled out due to Leverkusen’s high transfer fee demands. This time, however, the situation is different: Tah will be a free agent at the end of the season, and Bayern are back in the race to strengthen their defence. (Source: Bavarian Football Works)

In the 2024/25 season, Jonathan Tah made a total of 48 competitive appearances for Bayer Leverkusen. These included 31 matches in the Bundesliga, 10 in the UEFA Champions League, 5 in the DFB-Pokal, and 1 in the DFL-Supercup. (Source: Transfermarkt)

Throughout the season, Tah delivered consistent performances at the heart of defence, particularly noted for his reliability in possession. He recorded a 93.1% passing accuracy across all competitions. (Source: FBref)

This statistic aligns directly with the playing philosophy of Bayern Munich’s Belgian head coach, Vincent Kompany. As seen during his time at Burnley and Anderlecht, Kompany favours a possession-based system with high passing tempo, and prioritises control from central areas. For that reason, signing a centre-back like Tah—who excels in distribution—stands out as not only a physical addition but a tactically ideal fit.

Interest from Europe’s elite continues

Interest in Tah extends far beyond Germany. According to ESPN, Manchester United are preparing to enter the race should Barcelona withdraw due to financial limitations.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are also reportedly keeping an eye on the situation. According to Goal.com, Xabi Alonso—expected to take over as head coach—is keen to bring Tah with him to Madrid.

Decision expected at season’s end

Tah has confirmed that he will make his final decision after the season concludes. The experienced defender has stated that his priority lies in the sporting project and system compatibility, and he will carefully evaluate the offers from Europe’s top clubs.

“A new chapter is beginning for me. I’ve made this decision consciously, entirely with my development in mind.”
