Joshua Zirkzee joined Manchester United last summer in a deal worth around £36.5 million following an impressive spell at Bologna. After a promising start to life in the Premier League, including a goal against Fulham, the young forward struggled to maintain consistency due to tactical misalignment, managerial changes, and injury issues.
His time at Bologna told a very different story. Under Thiago Motta, Zirkzee impressed not just with goals but through his tactical versatility. Operating as a false nine, he became the focal point of the system, showcasing excellent hold-up play, link-up ability, and composure under pressure to guide attacking phases.
His close control in tight spaces and decision-making under pressure elevated him beyond the role of a traditional finisher. In Bologna’s possession-oriented, transition-heavy setup, Zirkzee often dropped deep to initiate build-up play and acted as a central connector who brought teammates into scoring positions.
As a result, Bologna became one of the lowest-spending yet highest-climbing teams in Serie A during the 2023–24 campaign. Zirkzee’s style of play was pivotal not only in securing a Champions League spot for the club but also in launching his own visibility on the European stage.
However, his first season at Manchester United did not follow the same trajectory. Initially seen as an alternative to the primary striker under Erik ten Hag, Zirkzee was later deployed at times within Ruben Amorim’s double-ten system. Injuries and fitness inconsistencies, however, prevented him from securing a permanent role in the squad.
According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Inter are looking to sign a technically gifted forward with long-term upside in the upcoming transfer window. In this context, Zirkzee’s Serie A experience and tactical flexibility have made him a top target for the club. The report adds that his market value has dropped compared to last summer, and Inter are now in a financial position to meet his wage demands.
Zirkzee is not the only name on Inter’s attacking shortlist. Como’s Nico Paz, Napoli’s Giacomo Raspadori, and Parma’s Ange-Yoan Bonny are also being monitored. However, given Real Madrid’s buyback clause for Paz and the contract situations of the other targets, Zirkzee appears to be the most accessible option in both sporting and economic terms.
On Manchester United’s side, the situation remains uncertain. According to The Sun, the club is planning a major overhaul of its attacking department this summer. With Zirkzee’s performances reportedly falling short of expectations, he has been placed on the transfer list, and the club is preparing to bring in a new elite-level striker. These developments position Zirkzee’s potential return to Serie A not just as a departure, but as a possible turning point in his career.
